You have probably noticed by now we like to keep a good eye on search engines and what is important. There are thousands of little things that come and go. Some of these things make absolute no or very little difference to your site or your potential listing appearance. But frequently a guru will swear it is the most important thing in the world. In no particular order here are a list of those things that are small but maybe have been sold as very important.
- Text/HTML Ratio
- Google Publisher
- robot text
- XML site map
- Blogs
- Mobile Load Time
- Domain Name / URL Text
- Domain Name Length
- TLD Extension
- Mobile Load Time
- Font size
- Font color
- W3C validate
- Microformats
- Dublin Core
There are very few things that will overwhelm your search ranking. We have a simple 3 part test we use to know if we will make an effort to fix something like this.
- Does it improve user experience or protect my user?
- Is it relatively easy or inexpensive?
- Does it improve what my search engine results appearance?
If we can wrap our heads around those three things, we are doing it. Otherwise, the improvement may have to wait until we do a major upgrade. And most likely by then the change will no longer matter. We'll either ignore it entirely or take our signal from Google. That is not to say that these things are not important but not always in the way it looks. For example, if you expect to get a lot of traffic from mobile devices, standard concern for retail, you had better be mobile friendly and load quickly ie have good mobile load time. It is important to have new fresh content. A blog will do that for you. Of course, if you are going to set up a blog and never update it and never use it, you are probably just as well with out it.
